1. Senior Dairy Farm Worker Dairy Farm Industry

Position Overview:

The Senior Dairy Farm Worker, also known as a Dairy Herd Manager, performs skilled tasks on a dairy farm, managing and supervising the breeding, raising, driving, feeding, and milking of dairy cattle.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Breeding and Rearing: Oversee dairy cattle breeding programs and the rearing of calves.
  • Health Management: Identify health and nutrition problems in dairy cattle and develop appropriate programs.
  • Feeding Plans: Develop and implement feeding plans to ensure optimal nutrition.
  • Pasture Management: Establish and maintain pastures and fodder crops for dairy cattle production, identifying plant health and nutrition problems.
  • Biosecurity: Implement biosecurity management measures to protect herd health.
  • Supervision: Supervise farming operations such as herding, driving, drenching, and milking.
  • Maintenance: Oversee the maintenance and cleaning of livestock housing and other farm infrastructure.
  • Training: Supervise work routines and train farm workers.
  • Technology Management: Maintain and operate data collection and analysis systems, as well as farm technology systems.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • An AQF Certificate III, including at least two years of on-the-job training, or an AQF Certificate IV. Alternatively, at least three years of relevant experience may substitute for formal qualifications.
  • Strong understanding of dairy cattle husbandry practices.
  • Experience in supervising and training farm workers.
  • Knowledge of biosecurity measures and animal health management.
  • Proficiency in operating and maintaining farm technology systems.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to perform physically demanding tasks and work in various weather conditions.
  • Capacity to handle livestock safely and effectively.

2. Dairy Cattle Farm Operator Dairy Farm Industry

Position Overview:

The Dairy Cattle Farm Operator performs routine tasks on a dairy farm, such as breeding, raising, feeding, driving, and milking cattle.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Livestock Care: Assist with maintaining the health and welfare of dairy cattle by patrolling, inspecting, and reporting on their condition.
  • Feeding: Provide dairy cattle with feed and water and implement feeding and welfare programs.
  • Pasture Management: Establish pastures and crops for dairy cattle production.
  • Herding: Herd and drive dairy cattle to access feed and for milking and other farming operations.
  • Milking Operations: Wash and clean udder, use and sterilize milking machines, and perform milking shed hygiene processes.
  • Farm Maintenance: Undertake general farming activities, such as erecting and repairing fences, and maintaining and cleaning dairy cattle housing.
  • Equipment Operation: Operate and maintain general farm machinery, water supply, and irrigation systems.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • While formal qualifications are not mandatory, relevant experience in dairy farming is essential.
  • Basic understanding of animal husbandry and dairy farming practices.
  • Ability to operate and maintain farm machinery and equipment.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to follow instructions.
